86 101, Doncaster, Saturday 19th April 2008 after working the 09:34 from Kings Cross for Hull Trains. Apart from the location (Doncaster wasn’t wired until 1989) you’d hardly believe this scene wasn’t taken straight from the early 80s with the blue & grey Intercity livery. The ride up to Donny was quite a throwback too – it’s a shame some people may never know what made travelling on these trains so special.

There’s no constant drone from under-floor diesel engines, no claustrophobic interiors with rock hard seats with no view, no robotic pre-recorded announcements, coaches that feel solid rather than tinny and cheap, the heavy thud of the slam doors, windows that open… what went wrong?
